Robert, the Boatswain

                 Our Boatswain

Robert was born in Cantebury and as a young sailor traveled to the new colonies, eventually settling in the port town of Norfolk where he married and opened a tavern. A few years later he found his wife in the arms of the local tax collector and decided it was the sea that was his true love and set out to find his fortune, signing up with the pirate Howell Davis. In spite of being in charge of discipline aboard ship, Robert has the reputation as a generous man and enjoys entertaining the crew with his musical talents. He has vowed that
his life will not end at the end of a rope.

Alpheus, the  Quartermaster

Alpheus was fishing off the harbor entrance at Nova Scotia when his small boat was fired on  and sunk by a French man-o-war.  Having lost his source of income  he joined up with a privateer and gained considerable experience in naval combat.  When Queen Anne's War ended he was in the Caribbean and again without a job so he joined up with Howell Davis and became a pirate. His experience earned him the position of Quartermaster.

Pawel, the  Cook

Pawel's birthday and place of birth are unknown. Growing up  on a Caribbean island he was told by the natives that he had been shipwrecked there and that his parents had drowned. He is called "Red" because of his fondness for all things red and for his peculiar interest in fire. He developed a lucrative trade as a buccaneer but became a pirate after the Spanish put an end to that  career. Captain  Christopher Moody enjoyed Pawel's style of cooking and preserving meats (especially turtle) and recruited him to be the cook on Defiance.

Jamie, the
 Carpenter

Jamie, a Catholic, was run out of his home in Edinburgh by the Scottish Presbyterians and King James' troops. Refusing to call himself an Englishman after the Scottish government was abolished he stowed away on a French merchant ship bound for the new world. After three days at sea he was discovered by the ship's first mate, another Scotsman, who persuaded the Captain to put Jamie to work as a carpenter. Two weeks later, off the coast of Carolina, Jamie's ship was captured by Christopher Moody's pirates and Jamie signed on rather than be put to death.

Davey, the Gunner

Our Gunner

Davey's family heritage is a bit uncertain. As a child he was won in a game of chance by a tinker from Yorkshire and soon became an apprentice to his new master. By his mid teens Davey had become quite adept at making small, detailed metal parts. Pressed into service aboard the HMS Undaunted, he served as gunner's mate for two years before he jumped ship near Venezuela. After another year working as a wood cutter he joined up with pirates to seek his fortune.

James, the Musician

As a young man on his parents' farm in County Cork, James learned two things that would ultimately shape his life: how to play music and how to hate the English. When he heard that Christopher Moody, a fellow Irishman, had taken to piracy, James sought him out and signed  on with the crew, swearing  to damage the English as much as possible. Moody could not refuse the young man's passion, but since James had no sailing skills he was made the ship's musician. He has become a skilled swordsman as well.

Miguel, the Sailing Master

Our Sailingmaster

Miguel, the only son of a wealthy Portugese land owner, was well liked and respected in his home town, a place that bears his family's name. However, things changed  after a slight indiscretion with the young daughter of a government official. Miguel's father sent his son to live with his Uncle in the Azores but hired assasins soon followed. Miguel fled aboard a slave trader  and after two years was made the Pilot of the vessel. He and the ship's Mate, Bartholomew Roberts, were taken captive by Howell Davis off the coast of Africa.

Jack, the Cooper

Jack stowed away on a whaling ship out of the Port of Swansea, Gla Morgan County, Wales, when he was 17, hoping to make his fortune in the lucrative whale oil trade. When he was discovered on board it was too late to return to land so Jack was put to work as the cooper's apprentice in order to earn his keep. Ten months later, the whaler was boarded by pirates off the Massachusetts's colony. The pirates found very little of value aboard the ship, but  because of his new skill, and his shear size, Jack was taken and forced to sign on with Christopher Moody's crew
